One Dark Window
I think with this book you have to have the right set of expectations going in or you will be disappointed; so here are the expectations that you should have:
1) expect to like these characters and don’t expect them to work too hard to gain that affection; like them because they are characters in a book you’re reading and for no other reason.
2) bring some of your own imagination to the world. This is not gonna be N.K. Jemison-level worldbuilding here, so unleash your own creative thoughts and go ham.
3) the magic is unique, just don’t think about it too hard. Just go with it. Again, this is not that serious. It’s not that deep.
4) you are going to get one shmex scene and it’s not gonna be earth-shattering. There are other books for that and they usually have a shirtless man/vampire/elf on the cover. This is YA fiction.
5) this ends on a cliffhanger; you are not going to get a satisfying conclusion in this one book, you are going to have to read the next book if you want to find out how it ultimately ends.
For me, I just have so many books that I want to read that I’m not immediately going to go to the second book. This did not compel me. Try as I might; I really did not connect with this story or the characters that much. It felt honestly like watching a CW approximation of a fantasy book , and that’s not a read (pun intended), that is just not what I’m looking for at this time.
Unless The Nightmare completely takes her over and then has an illicit affair with Elm - if that happens in book 2, can someone please tell me so I can go read it.
