Slaying the Vampire Conqueror by Carissa Broadbent

This book is perfectly fine. I think I was just expecting something different than what I got and that ruined some of the enjoyment for me. I’m gonna give you a synopsis (without spoilers) and then I’ll go into what I did and didn’t like:

Our FMC is an assassin who has extrasensory powers because the cult she joined when she was a child (mostly because she had no other choice) ruined her eyesight on purpose. Our MMC is a vampire that is taking over the human kingdom. She is supposed to infiltrate his ranks, ingratiate herself to him and then slit his throat. It all goes smoothly until the slitting the throat because, well you know, he’s not as terrible as she thought and maybe he can live for just a bit longer and oops not his tongue in my mouth…

I love the idea that she’s an assassin who is super serious and capable and he’s a big dark warlord with a heart of gold. I did not really feel those ideas fleshed out enough. I don’t really know why, either; I can point to moments in the story where he is demonstrably good and she is clearly dangerous but I just didn’t feel it. I didn’t feel for this book. And I feel bad about that; it’s a solid book.

Medium spicy, but like Pace picante sauce medium.
