Wyvern by Grace Draven

The thing about Grace Draven is the extent to which I enjoy her stories has proven highly variable. Radiance is one of my all time favorite books, whereas The Undying King has got to be one of the least enjoyable reads of my mortal life. And I will keep giving this author chance after chance because when she hits, she hits hard. This was not a hit, per se. Not a miss either.

Synopsis without spoilers:

Our FMC is a village woman who plays a mean fiddle and takes care of her ailing grandfather. Not too exciting, but hey, it’s a life. No, the excitement was eight years ago when a hot piece of storytelling ass came through town and <insert euphemism involving fiddling and coming all through her town here>. Anyway, he had to go, she’s been pining ever since, which means little now because she’s being sent to the dragon on top of their mountain and will probably be eaten anyway. Le sigh.
Oh right, our MMC. He’s a dragon. Except he’s not. Because he’s a Wyvern. Except he’s…

It’s short, and that’s the exact length it should be to tell the story that gets told. It was a nice break from the (much longer) book I’m currently drudging through and made for quite a pleasant afternoon.
